Friday 1st - REDTENBACHER'S FUNKESTRA WITH HELENA-MAY

RB Funkestra featuring Helena-May 606 club chelsea live music venue soul groove funk club restaurant london9:30PM This incredible London-based 7-piece is led by Austrian bassist Stefan Redtenbacher who draws his inspiration from jazz, funk and soul. Stefan has established himself as the UK’s groove bass player of choice for many artists, with a list of musicians with whom he has worked including Steve Winwood, Sam Brown, Herb Alpert and Danny Gottlieb, while his own recordings feature “jazz/funk” legends Fred Wesley (Parliament, James Brown) and Elliot Randall (Steely Dan). The Funkestra’s name pretty accurately describes the high-energy feel of the music as this band, with its fiery two-horn frontline and slinky guitar, perform original funky grooves with an authority and style that is hard to beat. With 9 albums already to their name, tonight the band will be featuring music from their latest effort, “The Time Thief” which builds upon their patented sonic brand but raises the ante, referencing influences from old-school New Orleans blues to scale patterns reminiscent of Weather Report and enriched further by an intriguing mix of effects and filters, conjuring up memories of retro sounds from the 1960’s & 70’s. It’s a heady brew indeed and, as with their previous recordings, wonderfully showcases the raw energy and funk-driven bass riffs with which the band are now synonymous. Their shows, which always include a regular Guest Vocalist, will tonight feature the wonderful Helena May (Afro Cluster). The band is highly entertaining, with tremendous musicianship applied to some amazing music. A guaranteed great night out!

Sunday 3rd - ANITA WARDELL **Winner BBC Jazz Awards 2006/7, “Best Jazz Vocalist” British Jazz Awards 2013**

Singer Anita Wardell 606 club chelsea live music venue jazz club restaurant london8:30PM This award-winning Australian vocalist is another of those powerful and impressive singers who hail from “down under”. An established and experienced musician, Anita not only performs jazz standards in her own inimitable style but she is also universally recognised as one of the best “scat” singers on the international jazz scene. Invited to appear in New York, she was such a success that she was immediately invited back. Her three CD’s (“Noted” and “Kinda Blues” on the Proper label and “The Road” on Specific) have each received glowing praise, and are a showcase for her interpretative skills and vocal agility. Live, she’s even better, with a winning rapport that further adds to the charm of her performance. For this 606 show Anita will be performing songs from her upcoming album, “A Strange New Street”, featuring re-workings of classic standards as well as contemporary arrangements of songs such as Stevie Wonder’s “I Never Dreamed You’d Leave In Summer”. A much-vaunted teacher and educationalist as well as performer, Anita is undoubtedly one of the most highly regarded jazz vocalists in Europe. Accompanying Anita tonight will be her fantastic band of Sam Leak-piano, Jeremy Brown-bass and Steve Brown-drums. This is really good, hard-driving jazz from one of the great masters of bebop vocals.

Monday 4th - THE SUGAR KINGS QUARTET

Sugar Kings 606 club chelsea live music venue jazz salsa latin club restaurant london8:30PM If you're a fan of Latin music (and even if you're not!) you will probably know that the 10 piece Latin band The Sugar Kings, led by the brilliant Cuban percussionist Flavio Correa, is unquestionably one of the finest, and most authentic, Salsa/Son groups in Europe. However, you may not know that they also have a smaller cousin, The Sugar Kings Quartet. Also led by Flav this version features just four of the band but is still one of the most dynamic and exciting Latin groups to play here at the Club. Flav's description of the band really does sum it up best: "From the gambling dens of pre-revolution Havana, where the sweet smell of cigars hung thick in the air and the aged rum flowed, "The Sugar Kings" Cuban quartet present traditional Son, vintage mambo and Cha Cha Cha…with vocal harmonies and much frivolity..."!  The Sugar Kings quartet are: Flavio Correa (Percussion), Elpidio Alegria (Baby Bass/vocals), Daniel Carnago (tres guitar) and Rolando Domingo (Trumpet). An excellent opportunity to hear this particular line up at the Club, definitely one for the diaries.

“Latin and Cuban sounds from this authentic...band that bring their exultant vocals to the heart of Chelsea.” Time Out

Completing the quintet tonight will be RMG's regular rhythm section of Flo Moore-bass and Winston Clifford-drums. A world-class band performing classic contemporary compositions.

Singer songwriter Purdy 606 club chelsea live music venue jazz singer songwriter jazz vocal pop noir club restaurant london8:30PM We welcome Purdy back to the Club once again with what promises to be yet another fantastic night of masterful pop/jazz-influenced originals, with a smattering of standards thrown in for good measure. This outstanding singer oozes charisma, which combined with her sultry style and surefooted vocal delivery makes for a masterful evening of highly accessible music. With influences ranging from Nina Simone to Nancy Sinatra, her vocal prowess is stunning and her live performances demonstrate a strong connection with any audience lucky enough to see her live. She has impressed at a number of major events recently, including a 90,000 strong crowd at Wembley Stadium, Formula One events around Europe, The London Lifestyle Awards 2016 and has just made quite an impact as support on Jools Holland's most recent tour. Her 2015 album “Diamond in the Dust” affirmed her as a significant solo artist, and her recent EP “Both Sides of the Clown” (which we’ll be hearing songs from tonight) will continue that upward momentum. The music is a mix of originals and some covers in a style that Purdy herself likes to describe as "jazz influenced pop-noir singer/songwriter". The night wouldn't be complete without her brilliant supporting band, featuring the talents of Tim Sentance on piano, Jamie McCredie on guitar and a rhythm section of Tom Moore on bass and Dan Western on drums. Thursday 7th - BRANDON ALLEN'S TRIBUTE TO GENE AMMONS

Saxophonist Brandon Allen 606 club chelsea live music venue jazz club restaurant london8:30PM Brandon is an expat Australian saxophonist who has made quite an impression on the scene since taking up residence in London. A leading soloist in several jazz orchestras back home he also led his own successful group before decamping to Europe in 2002. His wonderfully fluent and incisive sax playing has been heard in prestigious venues all over Europe and at numerous festivals around the world, including the Womad World Music Festival, Reading Festival, Brecon Jazz Festival, The Vittoria and Terrassa Jazz Festivals in Spain, Manly Jazz Festival in Australia and the London Jazz Festival. In London alone he has performed with the likes of Eric Clapton, Mica Paris, Jools Holland, BBC Big Band and Omar, regularly hosts the Late Late Show at Ronnie Scott’s and is currently the featured saxophonist with the Kyle Eastwood Band, which gives you an idea of just how good he is. Tonight, for the first time, Brandon will be bringing his really exciting Gene Ammons Project to the Club. This is a quartet dedicated to the US master saxophonist Gene Ammons, one of the founders of the Chicago style of tenor sax playing and an artist whom Brandon holds in the highest of regard. From the early 1950's Ammons led his own bands, featuring artists such as John Coltrane, Donald Byrd and Kenny Burrell, but it was probably his two tenor sax "duels" with sax star Sonny Stitt that brought him to wider public attention. His broad and distinctive sound and strongly melodic, hard bop-influenced approach helped him to cross genres, and his unique use in the 1960's of the Hammond B3 organ in the trio format helped establish him as one of the founders of the "Soul/Jazz" style that was to become so prevalent in later years. The Project tonight will focus on music that he either wrote and/or recorded, spanning the whole of Ammons's career, from his early bebop beginnings in the late 1940's to the Groove tracks of the 1970's. In addition to Brandon on sax, the line-up for this 606 show features Arnie Somogyi on bass, Matt Home on drums and Brandon's Special Guest, the fantastic Dutch musician Bas Van Lier on piano/keyboards and, of course Hammond organ. Absolutely not to be missed, this one.

Sunday 10th - 606 CLUB SPECIAL: SALENA JONES

Singer Salena Jones 606 club chelsea live music venue jazz vocal jazz standards club restaurant london8:30PM A descendant of Crazy Horse, the famous Sioux Indian warrior chief, Joan Shaw was born in Newport News, Virginia. She began singing in church and by the age of fifteen was performing on the professional circuit, producing 156 singles (the first being released at the age of eleven), many of which can still be heard on YouTube today. After winning the talent contest at Harlem’s famous Apollo Theatre in New York, following in the footsteps of the likes of Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billie Holiday and Gladys Knight, from the early 1950s she was touring widely across the U.S. with her own “Blues Express Orchestra,” featuring virtuoso saxophonist “King” Curtis Ousley, as well as working regularly at famous Manhattan jazz venues such as the Village Vanguard and Minton’s Playhouse. At this time Leonard Feather, the noted jazz critic, named Joan as one of his choices as “most promising newcomer”, together with Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald and Mel Tormé. Not bad company. Glamorous and beautiful with a distinctive voice and relaxed style she received her first recording contract with Savoy in 1949 and the array of jazz greats she played and recorded with was vast, including Betty Carter, Cab Calloway, Billy Eckstine, Vic Damone and Lena Horne. However, by the early 1960s Joan felt she needed to expand her horizons and so she bought a one-way ticket to Madrid. She sang one song at the “Whiskey and Jazz Club” the same night she arrived in Spain and was immediately engaged to sing nightly with Dexter Gordon. But London called, and she arrived to stay in 1965. The first thing her management recommended was a name-change - and so Salena Jones was born! She was soon booked to appear for two weeks at Ronnie Scott`s new club in Frith Street, but was such a hit that she was eventually held over for a total of seven consecutive weeks – still a record after all this time. Over the last five decades, Salena has been a central figure on the British jazz scene and from her base here has set out to conquer the world. She has played everywhere, from Canada, throughout Europe, South Africa, South America, to the U.S. and Asia, where she is a well-loved artiste (appearing in Japan at least annually since 1978). She has performed with the likes of Louis Armstrong, Ray Brown, Sarah Vaughan, Maynard Ferguson, Mark Murphy, Lionel Hampton, Dudley Moore, Tom Jones, Antonio Carlos Jobim, the BBC Big Band and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Similarly, her recording career has reflected her ability to choose a varied repertoire, moving beyond just jazz boundaries, with a total of 43 solo albums and 22 singles produced over a period of 50 years, establishing an enviable international reputation in the process. Salena’s band for this 606 date, her first here at the Club, includes famed soloists Alan Barnes on sax and Martin Shaw on trumpet along with Gabriel Latchin-piano, Jules Jackson-bass and Pete Cater-drums. A special night from a remarkable artist and highly recommended.

“Stunning British-based US singer Jones has a touch of Sarah Vaughan in her technique and a great feel for working intimate jazz venues. She’s on fine form, packing a soulful and emotional punch live” Time Out; “New Jersey’s world-travelled charmer is one of the best...singers in the business. Disciples who hung on her every sound at Ronnie Scott’s for years will know just what the velvet voice can do to jazz, blues, ballads and pop” Evening Standard; “Salena Jones...infinitely versatile she can swing from jazz standards to more intimate material. Her delivery is wonderfully free from artifice...a storyteller who allows the words..to speak for themselves…Jones is pure class” The Times

Wine More Wine and Song 606 Club Chelsea live music venue jazz latin club restaurant wine tasting UK8:30PM Well, this is a very interesting and, if the last ones are anything to go by, a really quite special experience. Tonight the 606 presents an evening we're calling "Wine, More Wine & Song" which will showcase wines from Spain's famed Rioja region, along with a bespoke three-course menu and music by Italian singer Rosanna Brandi, pianist John Crawford and their quartet. The wines featured this evening will be supplied by the multi Award-Winning Spanish winemaker Marqués de Riscal, named “European Winery of the Year” by Wine Enthusiast, who will be providing and talking about three of its finest wines, the 2016 Rueda Verdejo, the 2015 1860 Riscal Tempranillo and finally the now, very rare, last available stocks of its 2010 Finca Torrea, widely considered to be one of its most successful Riojas and a standard bearer for the brand. Each wine has its own distinctive character and the food served has been chosen and carefully prepared by our wonderful chefs to mirror its particular taste, personality and history. Our team have come up with some wonderful, homemade, dishes for each section of the evening and we will, naturally, have suitable vegetarian options for each course as well. And being the 606 Club there will, of course, be plenty of music too. Featured this evening will be the terrific singer Rosanna Brandi who will be performing a mix of classic jazz standards, Brazilian music and the occasional melodic original. And alongside her will be 606 regular, pianist John Crawford. Not only is John a fantastic Jazz and Latin pianist but, being half Spanish, he is also the perfect person for this evening's entertainment. So, as well as Rosanna's vocals we have also asked John to perform some music especially for the night with a "Jazz/Spanish" flavour, which should add even more sparkle to an already exciting programme. Accompanying Rosanna and John will be a rhythm section of 606 regulars Richard Sadler (bass) and Simon Pearson (drums). Although it may all sound a little "highbrow" that's certainly not the intention, in true 606 style the idea of the evening is just to have some fun, learn a bit about the winery, get to hear some good music, drink some great wine and eat some terrific food - very much like any other night...just with a bit of a twist. Wednesday 13th - **606 CLUB SPECIAL** "ALL FIRED UP!" feat. (amongst many others) TOMMY BLAIZE, DEREK GREEN, DAVE ARCH, TREVOR BARRY, TONY REMY, GRAEME BLEVINS, BARNABY DICKINSON (TRIBUTE TO MAURICE WHITE, EARTH WIND & FIRE)

All Fired Up 606 Club Chelsea live music venue soul groove club restaurant8:30PM After a series of storming, sold out, gigs I can absolutely guarantee that this band is unquestionably very special. Put together by singer Tommy Blaize and bass player Trevor Barry from the Tommy Blaize and Strictly Come Dancing bands, along with their friend and studio vocalist Derek Green, this band was formed as a tribute to the great Maurice White and his iconic band Earth, Wind and Fire. The amazing band they have assembled to do this includes between them work with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Robbie Williams, Pet Shop Boys, Amy Winehouse, Kylie Minogue, Massive Attack, Courtney Pine, Simply Red, Will Young, Duffy, Celine Dion, Phil Collins, the Bee Gees, Steve Winwood...you get the idea. And having put together and rehearsed 14 of the finest players on the scene what they then needed was a gig! Which is where we came in. There was the slight technical issue of how we would get 14 musicians on our bandstand, but bassist Trevor assured me it would be fine (!), and the gig was born. The music is exclusively EW&F material and is played with an intensity and excitement that makes this ensemble much, much more than just a "tribute" band. The gig was intended to be a celebration of EW&F but has now also become a memorial to Maurice White, who sadly passed away last year. The musicians who will be performing in this amazing line up tonight include Tommy Blaize, Derek Green-vocals, Trevor Barry-bass, Dave Arch, Pete Murray-piano/keyboards, Tim Cansfield, Tony Remy-guitars, Barnaby Dickinson-trombone, Simon Gardner-trumpet; Karlos Edwards, Jody Linscott-percussion and Andrew Small-drums. This is a unique night of Groove-filled joy featuring some of the finest musicians in Europe, and booking is definitely advised.

Tuesday 26th - DAN REINSTEIN'S BIRTHDAY GIG

Dan Reinstein 606 Club Chelsea Live Music Jazz London UK8:00PM DAN REINSTEIN American born but British educated, I first met Dan at the old Club when he was a medical undergraduate. Even then he was an impressive player, and after taking time off his medical studies to go to the Berklee School of Music he became even more remarkable. He returned to the USA in the early 90s where he became one of the world’s leading experts in laser eye surgery (he’s now officially Professor Reinstein). But he never stopped playing, and when he returned to London to live and work it was great to hear his fluent, classic hard-bop, muscular sax playing again. Also featured tonight will be Shanti Jayasinha on trumpet and Tim Lapthorn on piano.
